Over 22 lakh tablets, including banned drug, seized

PATIALA, 6 AUG 2013: In one of the major drug recoveries in the state in recent years, the Patiala police claimed to have seized over 22 lakh tablets of various formulations, including 2.8 lakh tablets of banned drug, near Shambhu barrier on Monday. The drugs were seized from a truck coming from Delhi to Ludhiana by a joint team of drug authorities and the district police. Rajpura superintendent of police Bhupinder Singh Khatra said that around 10 lakh tablets of Mycrolit (Diphenoxilate), over nine lakh tablets of Lomotil and around 2.8 lakh tablets of Pravon Spas (Dextropropoxyphene Hydrochloride) were recovered from the truck.

Drug inspector Amit Lakhanpal said that Parvon Spas was banned by the Central government in May and its sale and purchase at any level had been withdrawn in the country. He said Monday's recovery was the largest in the district so far. Besides, around 11,000 tablets of contraceptive (anti-pregnancy) drug Mefigest were also recovered. He said that bills recovered from the truck had names of prominent drug firms of Delhi and Ludhiana. The bills were issued against a Ludhiana-based firm.
Khatra said that a case under various sections of 22/61/85 Narcotic Drugs and Physchotropic Substance and Section 26 (A) of Drug and Cosmetic Act has been registered.
