Drugs seized, one held for illegal collection

IMAPUR, 22 JULY 2013 (MExN): Excise personnel posted at the Chumukedima Check-post on July 21 confiscated 33 thousand capsules of restricted pharmaceutical drug - spasmo proxyvon. The restricted drug was found in the possession of one Md. Ziaour Rahman (22 years), hailing from Lilong Turel Ahanbi, Thoubal, Manipur.

According to the Excise Narcotic Cell, the accused procured the drugs from Kolkata and was taking it to Imphal. He had reached Dimapur with the illicit consignment by train on the night of July 21 and had got on a taxi bound for Imphal. The capsules are valued at an estimated Rs. 19 lakhs in the black market. Spasmo proxyvon is said to be sold at Rs. 20 apiece in the illicit drug markets of Imphal and Moreh.
“These are merely painkillers but once it crosses into Myanmar, it’s turned into amphetamine and methamphetamine – the so called ‘party drugs’,” said an Excise officer. The accused was booked under section 13 of the Drugs & Cosmetics Act and section 2 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
In another incident on Monday, a 23-old man was arrested from the New Field Check-post, Dimapur for illegal collection of money. Police recovered cash receipts and Rs. 4000 in cash from the accused identified as Ngukato Awomi, resident of Burma Camp.
He was collecting entry fees from commercial goods carriers on behalf of a shadowy organisation called ‘Guide Association’. A separate receipt bore the name, ‘All Goods Carriers’ with an insignia bearing the words ‘Office of the AAD, GPRN, CHQ’. Police suspect the involvement of underground elements behind the cash receipts.
According to the accused, he was acting at the behest of a person, who was not named. The cash receipts were handed to him by the unnamed person, police were told.
