Pfizer India takes National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority to court over Benadryl price cut
NEW DELHI, 24 DEC: Pfizer India Ltd has taken the drug price regulator to court for reducing the price of a popular cough syrup, Benadryl, a brand it no longer owns. The Indian arm of the $68-billion US company has challenged the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority's (NPPA) price notification and penalty notice alleging overcharging, a company spokeswoman said. Benadryl, sold by Pfizer to Johnson and Johnson in 2008, has annual sales of Rs 14 crore, according to pharma market research firm IMS Health India. |

NPPA drops few cases of overcharging, some cos make voluntary payments
New Delhi, 12 Dec: With the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) dropping a few cases of overcharging previously slapped against the companies, the total number of instances has come down from 812 to 807 during the last month. According to the latest document released by the pricing authority, the total amount sought to be recovered from the companies on the grounds of crossing the permissible 10 per cent increase of prices annually, the regulator sent 807 notices to recover a total of Rs.2316.87 crore as on November 30, 2011. |

जालंधर। राज्य के आठ जिलों में नशे की दवाएं बेचने वाले 232 पेंडिंग केसों पर कार्रवाई न करने के आरोपों में घिरे स्टेट ड्रग कंट्रोलर पर शुक्रवार को गाज गिर सकती है। इस मामले को लेकर सेहत मंत्री सतपाल गोसाईं ने शुक्रवार को चंडीगढ़ में बैठक बुलाई है। इसमें प्रिंसिपल सचिव, विभाग के डायरेक्टर और स्टेट ड्रग कंट्रोलर भी शामिल होंगे। बैठक में स्टेट ड्रग कंट्रोलर से नशे के आरोप में पकड़े जाने वाले मेडिकल स्टोरों पर कार्रवाई न करने का पक्ष सुना जाएगा।
Health Min asks state regulators to keep tab on companies trying to dodge price ceiling by changing ingredients
New Delhi, 5 Dec: Even as the new draft policy prepared by the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) suggested price control of formulations to check the companies from circumventing the practice of dodging price control mechanism, the health ministry has asked the state regulators to report cases of companies changing ingredients while retaining the popular brands. Sources in the ministry said no fresh case had been reported yet but all state drug controllers have been asked not to grant licences in such cases. Apart from this, the ministry has also asked them to implement sternly the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics (amendment ) Act, 2008 that enhanced penal provisions against tampering with the quality of drugs. |

New Delhi, 1 Dec: The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has revised the prices of 146 formulation packs, including some widely used packs containing Ibuprofen and Analgin. In another significant move, the price regulator has taken Methyl Prednisolone out of the scheduled category. "Consequent upon the notification issued vide S.O. No 1503(E) dated 01.07.2011 notifying that Methyl Prednisolone is not a derivative of scheduled bulk drug Prednisolone and therefore considered as non-scheduled bulk drug under Drug (Prices Control) Order, 1995, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority hereby withdraws the price notifications / orders relating to price fixation/ revision of Methyl Prednisolone based formulations as single ingredient issued under para 8 and 9 of the DPCO, 1995 with immediate effect," said a notification |

Medicines' prices should not escalate, Supreme Court tells Centre
NEW DELHI, 17 NOV: Amid fears that drug prices may shoot owing to the proposed drug pricing policy, the Supreme Court today asked the Union government to ensure that rates do not "escalate" causing a burden on the common man. "Prices should not escalate. There are apprehensions that prices will escalate. In the name of the new policy the prices shall not escalate. Because we have much much more consumers in India than other parts of the world," the court observed. |

FDA cracks down on 14 firms for misleading ads (16/11/11)
Mumbai, 16 Nov: In a major crackdown on misleading advertisements for aphrodisiacal drugs, the Maharashtra Food and Drugs Department has asked around 14 companies to correct their promotional campaigns. A senior Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officer, on condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media. said officials from across the state seized stocks worth Rs 5 lakh of the five alleged aphrodisiacs.

Government frees sale of Tamiflu, only drug effective against swine flu and bird flu
NEW DELHI, 17 OCT: India's six lakh chemist shops can now stock and sell oseltamivir phosphate or Tamilfu - the only known drug effective against both the deadly influenza strains H1N1 swine flu and H5N1 bird flu. India has decided to lift "restricted sale" of the drug and make it available through all chemist shops against a doctor's prescription. Till now, oseltamivir was the only drug available for treatment of H1N1 swine flu virus humans and indiscriminate and unregulated use access to this drug would have made it ineffective. |

NPPA may get power to verify landed cost of drugs
NEW DELHI, 3 OCT: The drug price watchdog may get powers to verify landed cost of drugs that are under its control. The government is considering amendments to the drug pricing law to authorise the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) to seek details of landed cost of medicines. Landed price refers to the cost of medicines when they reach Indian shores. The regulator fixes the price of these drugs on the basis of this. "Changes and modifications are needed to make drug price regulation more effective," a senior government official said. |
Health minister may not favour inclusion of Schedule HX in D&C Act
Mumbai, 5 Oct: The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI)'s proposal to introduce Schedule HX in the Drugs and Cosmetics Act (D&C Act) to regulate the use of antibiotics in the country may not be a reality in the immediate future as the union health minister is reviewing the proposal, it is learnt. According to sources, union health minster Ghulam Nabi Azad is not in favour of the implementation of the DCGI's proposal at its present form as there are fears that the implementation of the Schedule HX will not be practical in the Indian context as a large number of people are living in the remote areas of the country where there is a dearth of qualified doctors. |

Cipla, Dr Reddy's under DCGI scanner for selling banned drugs
NEW DELHI, 19 AUG: The country's drug regulator has sent show-cause notices to Cipla and Dr Reddy's Laboratories for selling drugs banned by the government and is planning similar action against a few other top drug makers. In June, a team of drug inspectors found large stocks of three banned medicines in 85 chemists during surprise inspections conducted in Delhi and Bhiwadi in Rajasthan to clamp down on drug makers and chemists selling banned medicines. The Drug Controller General of India, or DCGI, sent the notice a few weeks back. |

Cipla continues to lead tally of defaulters in overcharging cases
New Delhi, 1 Aug: The outstanding arrears by pharmaceutical companies on the grounds of overcharging continued to increase steadily with Cipla remaining the leader of the pack, even as the recovery attempts by the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Agency (NPPA) did not improve in proportion to the rise in the arrears. According to the latest list published by the NPPA, the agency sent out demand notices to the companies in 804 cases for a total recovery of Rs.2350.28 crore till May 31. The total recovered amount stood at Rs.210.20 crore, since the inception of the price monitoring agency. |

Australia, 18 July: The TGA is advising health professionals and consumers that use of the diabetes medicine, pioglitazone, for more than a year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. This advice is partly based on the results of a study in the United States indicating a possible increase in bladder cancer risk among patients taking pioglitazone for more than two years, compared with diabetes patients who are not taking the medicine1. The study found an increased risk of bladder cancer in patients with the longest exposure to pioglitazone. The chance of developing bladder cancer in patients on pioglitazone for greater than 24 months was 1.4 times the chance in diabetic patients not on pioglitazone. |

Private hospitals are not hotels to charge exorbitantly: SC
NEW DELHI, 6 JULY: Criticizing the city's big private hospitals for their steep charges, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that they are acting like star hotels and have not kept their promise to treat the poor -- 25% outdoor and 10% indoor -- free of cost. "You got the land at a very cheap rate from the government because of this promise. If you admit a poor patient but ask him to pay for everything, it is not free treatment," said a bench comprising Justices R V Raveendran and A K Patnaik as it gave the hospitals two weeks to prepare a comprehensive plan to give effective free treatment. |

Shift from medicines to food supplements under NPPA scanner
New Delhi, 1 July: Medicine price regulator National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) is exploring ways to arrest the increasing trend among pharmaceutical companies to shift their products from the drug category to the dietary supplement and neutraceutical segment. Through such a shift, pharma companies are able to escape government price regulation. Noting that companies such as Ranbaxy, Merck, Trikko and Indochem, etc have in the past shifted some of the products from the medicine category and got manufacturing licences under Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, NPPA has sought law ministry’s advice to tackle the situation. |

Decision on banning of painkiller drug on June 20
New Delhi, 18 June: Banned in many countries, including the UK and US, popular painkiller drug dextropropoxyphene is now under scanner in India too. At a meeting to be held by the Drug Controller General of India on June 20, over a dozen experts will meet to review the safety of the drug. "It is important to review the drug to see if it is safe for human consumption, after which we will take a decision without taking it for further consultations," said a senior official in the DCGI office. Dextropropoxyphene is sold under popular brands like Proxyvon (Wockhart), Corbutyl (Sanofi), Parvon (Jagson Pal), Dexovon (USV) and Sudhinol (Ranbaxy). The drug can lead to addiction if used for prolonged periods, doctors said. | |

Health ministry ready with draft for adding Schedule HX under D&C Act
New Delhi, 20 June: The Union health ministry is ready with the draft of a national antibiotics policy by inserting a new Schedule called HX under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act with a view to preventing the misuse of drugs numbering about 70 antibiotics. Sources in the Ministry said the draft has been sent for vetting by the Law Ministry before forwarding it for further steps including getting the approval of the Drugs Technical Advisory Board (DTAB). The Drugs Consultative Committee had already given its go-ahead to the proposal. Currently the antibiotics are placed under the Schedule H of the D&C Act. |

Banned drugs on sale, makers face music
New Delhi, 17 June: Several leading pharmaceutical companies face legal action after raids this week showed drugs manufactured by them continue to be available despite their having been banned by the government. Thirteen teams of officials raided some 135 pharmacists in Delhi and Rajasthan on Wednesday, and found 83 of them selling banned drugs. Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr Surinder Singh said the manufacturer is culpable, as is the retailer. "Once the drug is banned, it becomes the responsibility of the manufacturer to recall the batches of these banned drugs already in the market," Dr Singh said. |

New essential drugs list finalized after eight years
NEW DELHI, 11 JUNE: India has finalized the country's all new National List of Essential Medicines (NLEM). It has 348 essential medicines, while the 2003 list had 354. Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) Dr Surinder Singh told TOI that 47 dugs have been deleted from the 2003 list. However, no anti-cancer or anti-HIV drugs have been deleted. He said eight new cancer drugs have been added in NLEM 2011, aggregating the tally to 30. Carboplatin, Chlorambucil, Daunorubicin, Filgrastim, Ifosfamide, Imatinib, Mesna and Oxaliplatin are the new cancer drugs that have been included in the list. |
Soon, special cell to monitor global trend on banned drugs
NEW DELHI, 9 JUNE: India is going all out to monitor global ban on drugs. The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has ordered the setting up of a new special cell in the Central Drug Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) that will monitor the fate of drugs being sold both abroad and back home. India has always been blamed for allowing the sale of drugs that are banned in other countries for proven adverse effects. |

Expired drugs to be moved out of stores in 15 days
CHENNAI, 1 JUNE: Unsold medicines will be cleared out of pharmacies within 15 days of their date of expiry and drug inspectors will be empowered to cancel trade licences of erring pharmacies . These are the recommendations of a high-level panel for amendments to the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. The existing rules ban sale of expired drugs, but do not specify their disposal. A group of senior drug officials from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi and Punjab who met in Chennai on Monday also recommended that it should be made mandatory for drug manufacturers to track medicines and ensure they are destroyed within 20 days of the date of expiry. |

लाइफ लाइन से अब मिला खाली इंजेक्शन
जयपुर. एसएमएस अस्पताल के लाइफ लाइन स्टोर से खरीदा गया किडनी ट्रांसप्लांट के बाद मरीज को दिए जाने वाला एक लाइफ सेविंग इंजेक्शन खाली निकला। डॉक्टरों की मानें तो इंजेक्शन की अधूरी डोज मरीज की किडनी के लिए गंभीर खतरा हो सकती थी।
कुछ समय पहले ही जनाना अस्पताल के लाइफ लाइन स्टोर में भी ग्लूकोज की बोतल में फंगस का मामला सामने आया था। एसएमएस अस्पताल के नेफ्रोलॉजी वार्ड में भर्ती गंगानगर निवासी ओमप्रकाश सुथार ने बताया कि किडनी ट्रांसप्लांट के बाद क्रिएटिनीन के लिए गुरुवार को लाइफ लाइन फ्लुड स्टोर से इंजेक्शन खरीदा था। नर्स जब उसे लगाने आई तो पता चला कि उसमें दवा ही नहीं थी। परिजनों ने बताया कि स्टोर वाले ने इंजेक्शन बदला भी नहीं।

रामदेव के पतंजलि योग केंद्र पर छापा
मुंबई. खाद्य एवं औषधि प्रशासन (एफडीए) विभाग ने योगगुरु बाबा रामदेव के भायंदर (पश्चिम) स्थित पतंजलि योग शॉप पर छापा मारा। विभाग ने वहां से आयुर्वेदिक दवाइयों और चूर्ण के नमूने जांच के लिए जब्त किए हैं।
एफडीए ने यह कार्रवाई जश्मी शंकर नरपुला (39) नामक महिला द्वारा भोईवाड़ा पुलिस स्टेशन में दर्ज कराई गई शिकायत के आधार पर की है।

Bangalore, 5 May: Karnataka Drugs Controller, Dr BR Jagashetty, will head the Committee for Amendments to the Drugs & Cosmetic Rules constituted by Drug Controller General of India. A preliminary meeting of the Committee has been called on May 5, 2011 to discuss the plan of action with regard to the amendments pertaining to the Drugs & Cosmetics Act 1940.

Five held for smuggling govt hospital medicines
New Delhi, 28 Apr: A gang of five persons, including two pharmacists, were arrested by the Delhi Police for allegedly siphoning off medicines meant for the poor from the government-run Hedgewar Hospital, police said on Thursday. Medicines worth Rs 60 lakh were recovered from the accused, identified as Ashwani Sharma (35), Pyare Ali (35), Hakim Singh (45), Dharmender Kumar (40) and Narender Sharma (56). Narender is the head pharmacist at Hedgewar Hospital, while Kumar works under him, Sanjay Kumar Jain, DCP (Northeast) said. "Ashwani and Narender were the kingpins, were operating the gang for a year," Jain added. |
Global threat: 60% of deaths caused by chronic diseases
NEW DELHI, 28 APR: Three out of every five deaths in 2008 were caused by non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cancer, stroke, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. What's worse, deaths caused by these diseases are expected to increase by 15% in the next decade - from 36 million in 2008 to 44 million in 2020. In 2030, it will cross the 50 million mark. The region projected to have the greatest total number of NCD deaths in 2020 is South-East Asia - 10.4 million deaths. These stats are bound to bother India since 80% of these deaths occurred and will occur in low and middle income countries, according to the first global status report on NCDs launched on Wednesday by the World Health Organization. |

DCGI: Cancel licences of those exporting banned malaria drug
New Delhi, 27 Apr: The oral single drug formulation of Artemisinin, having potential to become resistant to malaria, has been withdrawn from India. However, some manufacturers continue to produce and export it as a mono therapy. On Tuesday, the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) asked the state drug controllers to cancel the licence of such manufacturers with immediate effect. |

Two Indians get death sentence in Malaysia for drug trafficking
Kuala Lumpur, 26 Apr: Two Indian nationals have been sentenced to death by two separate Malaysian High Courts for trafficking in 12 kg of ketamine drug, reports said on Tuesday. In the first case, the High Court here sentenced Samad Mohamad Sulthan, to death for trafficking in 3.9 kg of ketamine at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) two years ago, national news agency Bernama said. |

Early this month, Supreme Court passed a significant judgement on a case involving GSK and the Central government on overcharging of certain drugs in violation of Drug Price Control Order of 1979. The company was asked by the apex court to pay a sum of Rs.71.21 crore to the government marking the end of a 20-year old dispute over the pricing of Betamethasone Alcohol, Betamethasone 17 valerate and Betamethasone di Sodium Phosphate. These drugs were used for manufacturing formulations for skin-related problems and fungal infection. By delivering the judgement, the Supreme court set aside a Delhi High Court order which in 1991 rejected the government’s demand on GSK as illegal and arbitrary. |

Health ministry finalises 9-member panel to study efficacy, safety of human placental extract
Mumbai, 20 Apr: The union health ministry has finalised the 9-member expert committee to go into the issue of efficacy and safety data of human placental extract which has been banned by the government along with some other controversial drugs including the non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug nimesulide suspension, gastroprokinetic agent cisapride and decongestant drug Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) on February 10 this year. Renowned pharmacologist Dr YK Gupta of AIIMS will head the panel. Other members of the committee include Dr Ajay Kumar of IMA, Dr Vijay Kumar of IDRI, Dr Sharma of ICMR, Dr Kotwal of AIIMS, Dr VK Tiwari, Dr VK Chakravorthy, Dr CM Sharma and Dr Lakhbir Dhaliwal of PGI, Chandigarh. |

Centre bans OTC sale of 'wonder drugs'
NEW DELHI, 16 APR: India is banning both availability and over-the-counter sale of latest generation of antibiotics from general pharmacies in a bid to put a stop to the country's obsession with popping a pill. The move will make 'wonder drugs' ineffective. A notification will be issued on Monday by drug controller general of India (DCGI) Dr Surinder Singh that will put around 90 antibiotics under a new schedule, HX, as per the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. |

Delhi HC refuses to stay ban order on human placental extract, forms panel to examine efficacy
Mumbai, 8 Apr: The Delhi High Court has refused to grant stay on the union health ministry's recent notification banning the controversial medicine human placental extract which was banned by the ministry along with some other controversial drugs including the non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug nimesulide suspension, gastroprokinetic agent cisapride and decongestant drug Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) on February 10 this year. Refusing to grant stay order, the court has constituted a 9-member expert committee to go into the issue of efficacy and safety data of human placental extract and the expert committee has been asked to submit a report within one month time. |

LIST OF DRUGS BANNED FOR MARKETING IN INDIA
The Government of India vide notifications published in the Gazette of India vide G.S.R. No. 578 (E) dated 23/07/1983 and subsequent amendments, made under Section 26 A of Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 has prohibited the manufacture, sale and distribution of the following categories of fixed dose combinations which do not have any therapeutic justification or are likely to involve risk to human beings:
FSSAI, NPPA to frame rules to curb shifting of ingredients from drugs to food supplements
New Delhi, 23 Mar: After keeping the issue 'in process' for over two years, the Health Ministry has now asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) to frame rules, in consultation with the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), to check the practice of pharma companies changing ingredients of drugs to dodge price control mechanism. |

Pharma Gladiator to challenge Madras HC order on nimesulide & PPA in Supreme Court
Mumbai, 21 Mar: The Pharma Gladiator, an NGO working to eradicate the grievances of pharmaceutical traders in the country, will soon move Supreme Court to challenge the recent Madras High Court order in which the high court has allowed the drug companies to liquidate the stocks of nimesulide suspension and Phenylpropanolamine (PPA), which were recently banned by the union health ministry along with some other drugs that were found to make adverse effects on human health. "We think the verdict of Madras HC may save the pharmaceutical houses but it it a great loss for the country if the ailing people will be compelled to have those products even for the next 6 months knowing they are having poisons instead of medicines to get prevented or cured from sickness, disease and illness", said Narendra Jain, chief trustee of Pharma Gladiator (India). |

Karnataka drug dept installs NIC software to keep track of manufacture and pharmacy outlets
Bangalore, 18 Mar: National Informatics Centre (NIC), of the Government of India, has installed its software at the Karnataka Drugs Control department which would allow it to keep tabs of manufacture and pharmacy outlets dealing with the drugs. The software which is presently undergoing the operational trials to link the entire state regulatory departments will require another 45-60 days to streamline the process. Karnataka is the third state in the country after Gujarat and Maharashtra to install the NIC software. Although the state drugs control authority has issued two circulars to this effect, warning the manufacturing companies not to manufacture and chemists not to stock and sell any of the banned drugs i.e. Nimesulide, sibutrimine, R sibutrimine, cisapride, decongestant drug Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) and human placenta extracts, it will commence its surprise inspections in a few days to ascertain the extent of compliance of the warning notice, Dr BR Jagashetty, Karnataka drugs controller told this reporter. |
