Manufacturers should be held responsible for drug quality'

THE HINDU DATE:- 29/9/2010

Madikeri: Chemists and druggists sell medicines prescribed by doctors and cannot be held responsible for the quality of the drugs supplied by manufacturers, A.K. Jeevan, president of the Kodagu Chemists and Druggists Association, said.
He was addressing presspersons here on Tuesday. Mr. Jeevan's reference came in the wake of the recent deaths of three patients allegedly due to drug reactions. Two of them died at the district hospital here after they were brought from the Sunticoppa primary health centre and one at the Kushalnagar hospital. He also referred to the incident in which an irate crowd had thrown stones at a medical shop in Kushalnagar from where the ‘Rantac' injection was bought as per the prescription of the doctor at the hospital
.
If anyone had doubts about the medicines purchased from medical shops in Kodagu, they could contact the office of the Assistant Drug Controller situated near the market in Mahadevpet, who would immediately take action, Mr. Jeevan said.
Replying to a question that needle-less syringes were being supplied to government hospital in Kodagu, he claimed that this was being done to facilitate administering of various doses of injections. A smaller tube might require a smaller needle and a bigger one, he explained.
About the paracetamol injection ampules seized by the Drug Control Department in Bangalore from the Sunticoppa public health centre, he stated they were safe and reports suggested the same. However, confirmation from the Department of Health was awaited. People had been raising doubts about the medicines being purchased in the medical shops following reports of drug reaction deaths. Both the media and doctors who issued statements after such incidents needed to exercise care. Otherwise it would create panic, he warned.
