Government frees sale of Tamiflu, only drug effective against swine flu and bird flu

NEW DELHI, 17 OCT: India's six lakh chemist shops can now stock and sell oseltamivir phosphate or Tamilfu - the only known drug effective against both the deadly influenza strains H1N1 swine flu and H5N1 bird flu.
India has decided to lift "restricted sale" of the drug and make it available through all chemist shops against a doctor's prescription. Till now, oseltamivir was the only drug available for treatment of H1N1 swine flu virus humans and indiscriminate and unregulated use access to this drug would have made it ineffective.

NPPA may get power to verify landed cost of drugs

NEW DELHI, 3 OCT: The drug price watchdog may get powers to verify landed cost of drugs that are under its control.
The government is considering amendments to the drug pricing law to authorise the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) to seek details of landed cost of medicines. Landed price refers to the cost of medicines when they reach Indian shores. The regulator fixes the price of these drugs on the basis of this.
"Changes and modifications are needed to make drug price regulation more effective," a senior government official said.

Health minister may not favour inclusion of Schedule HX in D&C Act

Mumbai, 5 Oct: The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI)'s proposal to introduce Schedule HX in the Drugs and Cosmetics Act (D&C Act) to regulate the use of antibiotics in the country may not be a reality in the immediate future as the union health minister is reviewing the proposal, it is learnt.
According to sources, union health minster Ghulam Nabi Azad is not in favour of the implementation of the DCGI's proposal at its present form as there are fears that the implementation of the Schedule HX will not be practical in the Indian context as a large number of people are living in the remote areas of the country where there is a dearth of qualified doctors.
